Slow batch processing

It seems MS is silently dying.... there will be nothing in the logs that 
shows its working... only incoming connections.... i see MS in a ps like 
this...

 MailScanner: master waiting for children, sleeping
 6785 ?        S      0:09 MailScanner: cleaning messages

 6929 ?        S      0:08 MailScanner: cleaning messages
 7022 ?        S      0:07 MailScanner: cleaning messages

However there is nothing going on .... i ran the check_mailscanner and 
still nothing, any ideas?
