Well, I wasn't "justifying" it.

My point was more like: "Every vaguely modern desktop or server OS does this,
even Microsoft Windows, so you should already be familiar with this behavior."

ie: What hole have you been hiding in that you've not seen this before?

If I'd not seen it before, I'd be terrified at what I see in my Windows task
manager right now.. less than 40mb "available", but over 30% of my physical
memory is "System Cache".
