Sendmail patch breaks plain text auth

At the weekend I updated my RH9 Sendmail to the patched version using the
Fedora Legacy update.  I now have Sendmail 8.12.11.20060308/8.12.8.

Only problem is that smtp authentication no longer works.  Has anyone else
had this problem and if so, do they have a solution handy?
