Have you tried just hand typing everything into a newly touched file and
checking to see if the problem remained?
What does ":set list" in VIM show?
Dunno if that helps, but it would be the first two things I would try.

Three years now I've asked Google why they don't have a
logo change for Memorial Day. Why do they choose to do logos
for other non-international holidays, but nothing for
Veterans?
Maybe they forgot who made that choice possible.
