MailScanner 'breaking' text file attachments

I'm having a problem whereby text files attached to an email are 'changed'
when it goes through the mail server. It seems like line breaks are removed
from the file during the content scanning process. I have done some testing,
and found that setting "Dangerous Content Scanning = No" seems to fix the
problem - So I've narrowed the issue down to this feature.
 
Does anyone know of any reason why line breaks would be removed from text
files at all?
