How long ago was your previous update?

I do ALL the STABLE updates... from RPM... and my spamassassin.prefs.conf is dated:

-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 11023 May 8 14:53 spam.assassin.prefs.conf

(There is no RPMNEW)... so I am assuming May 8 is the lastest version to have?

As long as I ensure that any settings in the old one are in the new one, can't I replace the old one with the new? Is there are reason I should/should not do this?
