I/O Errors from sendmail

I'm seeing a lot of I/O errors from sendmail on messages that have passed
through the MailScanner/SpamAssassin combo here.  Is this a known issue or
am I experiencing something unusual here?  My MailScanner version is 4.51.6
and SpamAssassin version is 2.63.
