Take a look at /usr/share/doc/exim4-base/README.Debian.gz, which explains
how to choose between the monolithic and directory methods of creating
exim4.conf. It also explains the pros and cons of each approach, and gives
some hints on upgrading. Staying with Exim4 is likely to give you fewer
headaches in the future, as it is the default Debian MTA.
