bayes fails learning, but only sometimes

# grep bayes_file_mode *
spam.assassin.prefs.conf:bayes_file_mode 0666
# grep lock_method *
spam.assassin.prefs.conf:lock_method flock
And:
# pwd
/etc/mail/spamassassin
# grep lock_method *
local.cf:lock_method flock
mailscanner.cf:lock_method flock
