I've not seen the appliance but I have sen the surfcontrol email filter
software.  I think it uses trend as its virus engine.  Its basically a
proxy (in the same way that MS is a proxy).  One organisation I deal
with uses it, my impression is it drops mail it doesn't like without
telling anyone (even the recipient) which is okay on viruses, but not on
filename type rules.  It also seems to introduce large delays into mail
processing.  Both of these could easily by configuration problems or
inadequate hardware at the site though.  MailScanner is miles better!
