Exim msglog link question

I've just moved from MS/sendmail to MS/exim, and have a question related to
the Exim migration documentation in the FAQ. This is one of the steps:

Link the exim msglog dirs so the msglog mechanism exim uses wont break.

        ln -s /var/spool/exim/msglog /var/spool/exim.in/msglog

Can anyone explain why this is done? What problem does it solve, and how?

I just like to know why I do things...
