I don't know why, but I can confirm that I had the same experience. I finally resorted to the starter bayes database on the fortress website. Since then, I read one thing in the documentation somewhere that made me think my database from version 2.63 may have already been in the correct format for use with 3.01, so if I had it to do over again I might just try running it without the --sync and see what happens. There is nothing to lose.
