SA 3.0.1 Install failure questions

Let me ask this question also:

It looks like the tarball might be the solution to this, as I read all of
the old "RPM-based install package for ClamAV and SA 3" thread and saw no
definite answer. I saw a lot of different questions asked, but no real
solutions.

If I "rpm -e" my old spamassassin stuff and install the tarball, what are
things I should look out for? Can I do the CPAN stuff and end up with a
working SA?

I appear to have a working system using the newest MS and the old SA 2.64,
but I'm not really sure. The output on MailWatch does not look like what I
usually see. Although this was performed on a production server (I have no
test servers, I'm lucky to have production servers), this is one of my
lightest used. So I may be OK for now.
