cows: copy-on-write pages.  That message is a warning generated by the
2.6.x linux kernel, indicating it's having to do some rather non-optimal
behaviors to work around what mremap is doing. I believe 2.6.6 and higher
have this fixed with a better handling of CoW pages in mremap.c
