To answer my own question, changing the following "Quarantine Whole
Messages As Queue Files = no" allows me not only to release messages
cleanly but also view them in the MW interface is required..

btw if it concerns anyone, we've been using the mcafee daily dats (on
production qmail servers with qmail-scanner) quite successfully for more
than a year now and have faced minimal trouble with viruses. Extra dats
need manual intervention though.
