I'd strongly suggest that you do not do that. The AWL is not a rule, it's a
score averaging subsystem of the SA code itself, and this method does not
reliably disable the AWL, although bugs in SA might cause it to nullify the
score, this should be regarded as a SA bug and not used to configure SA.

Steven's question isn't about how to disable the AWL. It's about why the
normal MailScanner method doesn't work.

I think this might be a subtle API change on the SA end. Use the
"use_auto_whitelist" option until Julian can fix it. Julian's been aware of
the problem since SA 3.0 came out. In the meantime, if you've got SA 3.x
disable it with the use_auto_whitelist option as Steve did.

For those using 2.6x, SpamAssassin Auto Whitelist = no in MailScanner.conf
should work fine on it's own. Eventualy it should work for 3.0 again, but
use_auto_whitelist is a good workaround in the meantime.

Using a score 0 setting for the AWL is a bad idea. This works well for
rules with fixed scores, but not so well for the AWL which has a dynamic
scoring system and doesn't normally even have a score statement.
