I don't use the MailScanner update script because I also want this
functionality. The McAfee autoupdate script which I wrote and which
comes with MailScanner does the right thing when run directly from
cron. ClamAV's own freshclam program does almost the right thing when run
directly from cron: I invoke it with
        freshclam --quiet --on-update-execute=freshclam

"The right thing" is to send out an email if there is a problem or if the
AV virus data files are updated, and otherwise be silent.
