The actual line I type in was tar xvf MailScanner-4.28.5-2.rpm.tar.gz

	the file should begin by MailScanner-4.28.5-2
	
	like MailScanner-4.28.5-2.rpm.tar.gz for redhat.
	
	
	And I think your forgot a dash in front of xvf
