Is SpamAssassin really needed?

Understood - What I'm doing is helping a fellow OpenBSD'er to use MailScanner.
He posed some questions to me, many I found on the MailScanner site - this
only one (I sent him this link:
http://www.sng.ecs.soton.ac.uk/mailscanner/serve/cache/278.html) to help him
understand the need to use SA.

I am more or less on a fact finding mission - he's unsure about commiting to
MS.
