MailScanner/Sendmail Gateway LDAP

Is there a configuration which would allow "unknown users" to be rejected at
the smtp level of the mail gateway, using LDAP to check recipient addresses
from the 'inside' mail host? Much of the spam makes it's way past
MailScanner/Spamassasin resulting in "unknown user" bounce messages being
generated by the 'inside' host, rather than being rejected at smtp level
where the sending mailserver would have to deal with the error.

Can't seem to get it to work or find a resource with config examples.
