How long are you giving it?

What does `top` show during this time?

How many MailScanner child process do you have running?

Is MailScanner configured to invoke SpamAssassin?

Is MailScanner configured to invoke any AV scanners?

If you're using DNSBLs, either directly in MailScanner or in SpamAssassin,
is it possible
that you're having processes waiting on those DNSBLs?
