Agreed.
Can someone test what happens if I specify
export TMPDIR=/var/spool/MailScanner/incoming/SpamAssassin
in the init.d script. What does the clear-up code do with this.

The actual code I add will be that split over 2 lines as only bash can set
and export in the same line.
