I've seen bayes expiry cause SA timeouts before. However, it's hard to say
what your problem was since you were completely non-specific about what
errors SpamAssassin was giving you a lot of.

if it's timeouts, you can try running sa-learn --force-expire to manually
force a bayes expiry, which should clear the problem up for a little while.

In general, I'd recommend setting "bayes_auto_expire 0" in your
spam.assassin.prefs.conf. However, make sure you've got some kind of expiry
mechanism in place when you do it. Newer versions of MailScanner can do it
for you. Older versions you can use a cronjob to call sa-learn
--force-expire. Just make sure the cronjob runs as "root" instead of "cron".
