Seeing long delays with emails being delivered

Sendmail started up, couldn't see the DNS server, decided to forget about it
and resolve some other way - or, after a while, give up on resolving
altogether.
Restart sendmail, sendmail 'sees' DNS server, decides to use it.
How's that for a possibility?

Funky...check this out...ok...taking forever to send messages to the
private server, both name and IP. So this is what I did:
I issued a -HUP command to sendmail on the internal server and that seemed
to fix the problem.
I originally tried to reload BIND using rndc, but that did not fix
it....but when I -HUP sendmail, that made the difference right there....
Interesting...any ideas why that could be?
Thanks for your help Alex.
