Failed to link message body between queues

Hello folks,
I recently installed on an actual Debian
* Exim 4.32-2 and
* Mailscanner 4.30.3-2
I configured exim to run one as listener and the other one as
queuerunner. Nearly it works.
Fetchmail fetches my mails, and exim stores it in its incoming queue.
After mailscanner has checked that mail, it never appears in the
outgoing queue:
Jul 28 12:05:18 mailhost MailScanner[5958]: Failed to link message body between queues (/var/spool/exim4.out/input/1/1Bnts1-0004h2-2P-D --> /var/spool/exim4.in/input/1Bnts1-0004h2-2P-D)

The most curious thing is, why wants MailScanner store its mails in
subdirectories of the outgoing queue, and not directly without a
directory. When I create that directory (as above: "1") with the right
permissions, everything works fine for one mail. But restarting Exim and
MailScanner deletes that shortly created directories.
I do not understand, whether this is a Mailscanner or an Exim issue. So
please, don't be rude... I did not found this problem in combination
with Exim... so I posted it here.
It would be great if someone can help me out. Thanks ;-))
TIA,
Tom
