Another OT Question - HTTP Mail Service

Sorry for the 2nd OT question today.

Someone asked me how they could access our mail server by setting up Outlook
accounts by using the HTTP server type (similar to Hotmail, etc).

What type of server is Hotmail really running and what does the "HTTP"
designation mean as far as protocols etc. Is there something I would have to
do to make my server accessable when accounts are set up this way to my
server?
