I know that I'm using escaped @ and $ symbols in message.txt files. If I
don't, the trailing text won't display.

I have just found that a line containing no backslash works fine, while a
line with a backslash doesn't print, which is understandable. So if I put
in an email address like
         helpdesk at ecs.soton.ac.uk
it works fine.

Are you getting the reverse behaviour?
