Mailscanner not restarting

Just went throug my logfiles and I have to change my earlier statement, they
do restart but sometimes they just stop restarting.
Yesterday night they stopped restarting at about 1:00 o'clock.
Once in a while this just seems to happen causing /var/spool/mqueue.in to
fill up and mail not getting delivered anymore.
However, it happens at random ( as far as we know ) and we don't have any
idea why or how we can reproduce it.

At this time I have the following in my mail.log :
