Okay, it's sent.  Twice.  Sorry about the double.

To answer your questions:

The autoupdate for bit defender wasn't running, even with correctly set
paths.

I fixed it by replacing it with a 5-10 minute shell script.  It's not
pretty and could stand to be a bit more complete, but it does work.

Probably not portable enough to be of much use, but maybe it'll help. . .
if nothing else knowing that bit defender's autoupdate is on the fritz. .
. at least on RH9.
