See rpm -qi sendmail.  They update the release number within the package.
Latest is 9.90.  That number is appended to the sendmail version number in
the package filename.  If you are using up2date you probably just aren't
seeing the release number, but it's definitely there and not difficult to
find.  It also shows up in a listing of the installed packages:

# rpm -qa | grep sendmail
sendmail-cf-8.12.8-9.90
sendmail-8.12.8-9.90
sendmail-doc-8.12.8-9.90
