On my box, apt-cache search python2 shows me:

[root at host root]# apt-cache search python2
python2 - An interpreted, interactive, object-oriented programming language.
python2-devel - The libraries and header files needed for Python
development.
python2-docs - Documentation for the Python programming language.

So I guess python2 is part of the redhat 7.3 distro.
