outgoing message processing?

I'm running postfix on RH9.  I've got the recommended setup (with the two
configs, the second of
which only looks in the incoming queue?)  My question: because of this
setup, when I send email
to someone, it is subjected to spam and virus checks, causing a delay.  I
can understand the virus
checking, as I don't want to be sending anything if I somehow had my PC
infected, but I shouldn't
need to check my own email for spam!  Is there a way to avoid this?
