I download to /usr/RPM and extract it, but that's just convenient for me to know
where the last several versions of MailScanner are.

You do need to drop into the directory and run install.sh, that's what handles the
installation. It does not overwrite configuration files. When it encounters an
existing file it adds one that ends in .rpmnew, e.g.
/etc/MailScanner/MailScanner.conf.rpmnew. the upgrade script is used to move your
existing configuration options into the new files so that all the new options are
available to you but all your changes for existing options are saved.
