accumulation of files in /var/spool/mqueue.in

Greetings,

Using RH 7.3
Using Sendmail 8.11-6
MailScanner 4.13-3
Using McAfee AV

I have been happily using MailScanner for almost a year now and have had to
remove the accumulation of files in /var/spool/mqueue.in after a month or
so.

I am not sure if these are messages already delivered and were not removed
or ?

I have had no reports of missing email.
