update_virus_scanners doesn't notify

No, it logs to syslog - if you want an email to root when things go
wrong find the following line in update_virus_scanners

      ${UPDATER} >/dev/null 2>&1

and change it to...

      ${UPDATER} # >/dev/null 2>&1
