dying processes

I am not running Razor. I have MailScanner 4.10, SpamAssassin 2.43 and ClamAv 0.54 on Red Hat 8.0.
I would notice on my mailscanner-mrtg graphs that the number of MailScanner processes would drop from 20 to 3 sometimes, and stay there until I restarted MailScanner. I didn't look through the logs "real" hard, but my cursory examination didn't turn up anything.
