Error when MailScanner calls Sendmail

Dear Dan:

MailScanner does not call sendmail at all. It picks up messages from
mqueue.in, scans them and puts them in the mqueue directory which is
sendmail's default queue directory from where it picks up messages to
deliver.

Whether or not you were using MailScanner, you would have come up with this
error - unless we think the MailScanner scan has corrupted the message
headers/envelope in some form. I tend to disbelieve this given my 1 year
experience with MailScanner.

The place you need to look at is sendmail.cf if we are talking about
configuration for this problem. I've not come across a gethostby[ip] error
so far. Are you using any reverse lookup of IP to host to validate mail
domains/ recognise spam? Maybe RBL checks. Others in the list could help you
too apart from the FAQ in sendmail.org.

Mohan

Subject: Error when MailScanner calls Sendmail

I'm getting a note in the log from the MailScanner called sendmail
process, as follows, though it doesn't affect performance, it just
started appearing last friday morning:

Feb 24 23:07:50 mail sendmailMTA[22307]: h1P47nRN022307:
from=<xxxxxxxx at ntown.com>, size=18234, class=0, nrcpts=1,

daemon=MTA, relay=root at ntown.esper.com [216.111.16.26]
Feb 24 23:07:50 mail MailScanner[18194]: New Batch: Scanning 1
messages, 18701 bytes
Feb 24 23:07:51 mail MailScanner[18194]: Spam Checks: Starting
Feb 24 23:07:56 mail MailScanner[18194]: Virus and Content Scanning:

Feb 24 23:07:56 mail MailScanner[18194]: Uninfected: Delivered 1
messages
Feb 24 23:07:56 mail sendmail[22316]: gethostbyaddr(66.4.192.160)
failed: 3 #<------- THIS IS THE ERROR
Feb 24 23:07:58 mail sendmail[22318]: h1P47nRN022307:
to=<xxxxx at ortn.edu>, delay=00:00:08, xdelay=00:00:02, mailer=local,
pri=121098, dsn=2.0.0, stat=Sent

I can't figure out where I could find a config reference for this. The
IP address given is of the mailserver that is running the programs.
Anyone else ever see this?
