Sendmail Upgrade?

I have several servers running RHAS 2.1 which runs sendmail-8.11.x  I picked
up Nick Christenson's Sendmail Performance Tuning book and it is geared
towards 8.12.x  Since 8.12.x won't install via RPM, I want to compile it
from source and install.  Has anyone upgraded an rpm sendmail to a tar.gz
sendmail?  Anything I need to look out for?
