I do similar stats for our virus and spam scanning.  It gets done
daily, weekly, and monthly (I don't think yesterday's stats have been
compiled yet ... 2 more hours until that cron job runs).

So far, our biggest virus over time continues to be Klez-H.  When a new
one comes out, like Sobig-E a month or two ago, it might take over the
stats for a day or two.  After that, the new virus fades away and we're
back to Klez-H.  Same happened with Bugbear, for example.
