Timeouts in autoupdate scripts

We had a problem with either ClamAV or F-Prot locking up MailScanner
because of slow downloads back around the time you went on vacation.  I
was going to try the wget timeout parameter until Raymond pointed out to
me that wget had made the connection...it was just running around 1-3b/s.

That why I decided to use alarm calls in the script instead.
