defunct mailscanner

how come when i do a top on my server..i can see mailscanner <defunct>
beside it....
another qn....do i need to specify this
( -ODeliveryMode=queueonly -OQueueDirectory=
/var/spool/mqueue.in) in the latest version of mailscanner in
/etc/rc.d/init.d/sendmail?
