SpamAssassin weirdness?

Hi all,
maybe this has been covered somewhere already but....
When I upgraded mailscanner and tried to activate the spam filter I got no
results.... after playing with the config for a while I decided to
reinstall spamassassin and it started working.
Is this normal? Or have I missed something?
