mail archiving

Looks like we switch archiving on to a directory. Does this mean files are
stored in qf/df format? Can we use this facility to append mails to a single
file in the same format as how sendmail stores mail in /var/spool/mail/$user
file? Archived files can be used directly by a mail client then. Would I be
right in assuming that archiving of mails is done post cleaning/ scanning.
