Read the sendmail docs. This is normal. Some process incoming, some
outgoing. When processing outgoing, multiples will fire up depending on
the amount of mail in the queue and the amount of time that one process
is taking to deliver. Sometimes if there a messages that are delayed
because the remote system refuses the message, then a process will take
longer so another one starts to continue processing others instead of
waiting.

Sendmail seems to start several instances every once and a while.

???

root 26142 0.1 0.7 2760 1696 ? S 12:22:02 0:00
/usr/lib/sendmail
root 25815 0.0 0.8 2720 1816 ? S 12:13:23 0:00
/usr/lib/sendmail
root 25817 0.0 0.6 2696 1384 ? S 12:13:23 0:00
/usr/lib/sendmail
root 26141 0.0 0.8 2728 1840 ? S 12:22:02 0:00
/usr/lib/sendmail

Is this due to its own processes or mailscanner?

Thanks,

Henry
