Mailscanner 4.10 and broken sophos

There is no problem fixing sophos.
The point I was trying to make is that if sophos returns an error should the mail go through mailscanner as clean.

Can't you reinstall your Sophos? I'd think with no ide files, Sophos
would still run, but it might not know what to scan for.

How should mailscanner behave if the virus scanner e.g. sophos is
broken?
On a test machine I accidentally deleted all the ide files. I would have
expected mailscanner to fail and queue all the mail but it carried on
and passed all the mail as clean.
Am I missing something?
