I have just discovered that to match all possibilities that might occur with the RBL+, the pattern should actually read "1234567". You might want to patch your sendmail.pl file to contain this update. If you are unsure of the line to change, take a look at the MailScanner web site, I've just added a News item about the update. Not doing so will just mean that the spam tagging will be less effective than it might otherwise be. Many thanks to Michael Forrester at Aberdeen for sending me an accurate description of the RBL+. Before installing anything, save of copy of your /etc/sendmail.cf file and all your customised files from /usr/local/MailScanner/etc or /opt/mailscanner/etc 2. It is highly likely that the Linux RPM will over-write your /etc/sendmail.cf (I'm not too good at handling upgrades in RPM files yet) and your customised MailScanner/etc files, hence the warning in note (1) 3. There are quite a few new mailscanner.conf options. These are all documented at http://www.sng.ecs.soton.ac.uk/mailscanner/install/mailscanner.shtml#conf I advise you merge your customisations into the new version of this file, this is probably quicker than putting all the new stuff into your old file. A few options have been moved into an "Advanced" section at the bottom of the file. 4. Test it before you go live on your production systems (hopefully this goes without saying, but anyway... :-) The most obvious change to you will be that the Sendmail, Exim, Sophos and McAfee code has all been merged into one program. The most obvious change to your users will be the new text or HTML warning messages inserted at the top of the main body of infected messages, directing them to read the VirusWarning.txt attachments. Any problems with the distributions, give me a shout and I'll get straight onto it! Our setup was an Exchange server acting as both internal mail server and external mailserver (through a NAT box). As this server was also used for many other things, any time we had a problem with any thing, no email. So I wanted to use the Mailscanner as a filter on incoming mail, weeding out virii and acting as a store if the internal mail server was offline for any reason. My problem was I knew nowt about RedHat (SuSE is my preference) and even less about sendmail, exim et al. Downloaded RedHat, installed it, put on mailscanner with appropriate changes to the sendmail cf file, and it worked. The downside was that I now had an open relay for mail (due to my ignorance, not mailscanner) and started to get angry emails from upstream. Consequently, I now know more than I wanted to about sendmail mc files, but like all good fairytales, it all ended happily ever after. If any one needs help with basic sendmail config for mailscanner I may be able to help. By the way, we use Sophos as we have a site license for it. Marks out of ten for mailscanner - 10! For Sophos, we would have had to put the purchase through whoever, obtained the media, and so on, although I expect you can download a trial version, most of the AV vendors seem to offer that now (but perhaps not for Solaris). I think the fact that we never heard back from Sophos confirming what the licence costs would be didn't help (we heard conflicting reports of the cost from Julian's Networkshop presentation and other sources so we wanted to check it out). We needed to get this service in fairly urgently, not least because of recent SirCam and Magistr hassles. We were blocking most of these by simple content filtering but it was a drain on my time to go through the queue and check messages and free them up, and probably of certain dubious legality too. Also I'm away for much of the next 6 weeks, and I doubt anyone else would relish that task :) Strategically, we would probably have preferred to use Sophos to be honest, and continue with McAfee at the clients, giving us a "belt-and-braces" solution as the Network Manager here puts it. And maybe in the future we will. But for now, speed and convenience over-ruled all, so I'm afraid that's no help to you whatsoever! Jethro. Since you mention it (or rather since you don't), I'd advise anyone following a similar path to ensure that they familiarise themselves with RedHat's security update process *before* plugging the box into the LAN; RedHat is a very popular target for script-kiddies, worms, you-name-it these days. -- Nick Phillips -- nwp@lemon-computing.com Lady Luck brings added income today. I have just discovered, from my own checking, that some of you may have a corrupt copy of the pre-built Linux or Solaris "tnef" binary that was distributed as part of MailScanner 2.40. I don't believe the problem applies to other versions, but it is worth checking your installation never the less. Background ========== The "tnef" program is used to unpack "Microsoft Outlook Rich Text Format" email attachments, and I distribute pre-compiled Linux and Solaris binaries along with the original source to ease installation. Impact ====== MailScanner would not have been unpacking "Microsoft Outlook Rich Text Format" email attachments or checking their contents. This format is proprietary and can only be read by Microsoft Outlook, and is therefore not widely used: most people use "Plain Text Format" or "HTML Format" instead as these can be read by other mail clients. The author is not aware of any email worms or virii that explicitly use this proprietary format. Test ==== I suggest you test your current "tnef" program by doing the following: cd /usr/local/MailScanner/bin (or /opt/mailscanner/bin depending on where you have installed MailScanner) ./tnef --help This should produce the "tnef" command help message. If it does, your copy is okay and you need take no action. If it does not produce the help message, then please download a fresh copy of "tnef" from the links below. Solution ======== I have placed copies (which I have just checked) of the Solaris and Linux "tnef" binaries at the following URL's: http://www.sng.ecs.soton.ac.uk/mailscanner/files/tnef.linux http://www.sng.ecs.soton.ac.uk/mailscanner/files/tnef.solaris Please download the appropriate binary for your operating system and replace your original copy of "tnef" with this. Once you have replaced the file, check you have execute permissions set (type the command "chmod +x tnef*" while in the MailScanner bin directory to make sure). If you redo the test above, you should now get the help message. Alternatively, you can always rebuild your own "tnef" binary from the source, a copy of which you should also find in the MailScanner bin directory. Comments ======== This issue will be fixed in the next version, 2.41 which is a minor feature release and is due out shortly. Many apologies to everyone for this mistake on my part. The winmail.dat file it was unpacking was a massive 77kb ;) It had suceeded in extracting a file from the TNEF. Has anybody else ever seen this? I assume it's unrelated to the problem described below. Is there any way a TNEF archive could cause "recursion" in some way in the unpacking process? Or maybe it's just a bug in TNEF itself :) Anyway, just a FYI... There is a version of "scp" that comes with putty, called "pscp". You should be able to use this for copying files on and off your SSH server. It's not ftp, but it performs the same job (i.e. file copying). http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html -- Julian Field Teaching Systems Manager jkf@ecs.soton.ac.uk Dept. of Electronics & Computer Science Tel. 023 8059 2817 University of Southampton Southampton SO17 1BJ From howard at harper-adams.ac.uk Fri Aug 31 17:29:32 2001 From: howard at harper-adams.ac.uk (hrobinson@harper-adams.ac.uk) Date: Thu Jan 12 21:14:02 2006 Subject: ssh& ftp In-Reply-To: <5.1.0.14.2.20010831165606.06b07e78@hawk.ecs.soton.ac.uk> References: <200108311537.f7VFb0p18222@blackhole.harper-adams.ac.uk> Message-ID: <200108311628.f7VGStp18966@blackhole.harper-adams.ac.uk> On 31 Aug 01, at 16:58, Julian Field wrote: Hi Julian I downloaded pscp and it works providing I use howard and the file is owned by howard . There are (at least) two ways of doing it: 1) enable root logins over ssh on the linux box (bad idea, but possible); 2) have the logfiles owned and readable by a group that (only) people who need to read the logs are members of. Probably best to continue this discussion off this list; it's a little bit off-topic... I don't ever remember having to go into the configuration portion of the webmin module, as I remember it just sort of worked. Alas, not this morning. I installed the .8 module and it doesn't see the MailScanner install I did last night. Here are the questions it is asking and I just want to make sure I get it right. It wants to know the location of the MailScanner pid file. Anybody know where that is usually found (standard install on redhat rpm-based install)?
