New feature request: Historically MailWatch 1.0 used to use regexps to parse the reports for virus names, this wasn't particularly optimal and broke completely when the 'Virus Scanners = auto' functionality came out as MailWatch reads MailScanner.conf to work out which virus scanners were installed and therefore which regexp to use to parse the reports. I'm getting quite close to releasing an alpha version of MailWatch 2.0, hopefully in the coming weeks (not months...), but I don't have any virus reporting in the current version as I would like to change how this is reported. I would like to propose to move the virus name regexps into MailScanner itself as part of the scanner definitions e.g. something like: my %Scanners = ( sophossavi => { .... VirusRegexp => /INFECTED::\s(\S+)/ .... } Then store the virus names are a hash of hashes based on the safe filename and the virus scanner name, something like: %safefile = ("filename" => {'sophossavi' => 'W32/Mytob-HW'}, {'bitdefender' => '...'}) Storing it this way would then make it easy to spot when one scanner engine misses a virus compared to another (this event could also be logged to syslog also for those not using MailWatch) and makes it easy to see the names given to corresponding viruses from each vendor. I have a collection of regexps for a lot of scanners already, but would be happy to get demos/trials of each scanner to test this against so we have a complete set for each supported scanner (plus I can test each scanner and publish the results). What do you think? Kind regards, Steve. > -----Original Message----- > From: mailscanner-beta-bounces at lists.mailscanner.info > [mailto:mailscanner-beta-bounces at lists.mailscanner.info] On > Behalf Of Julian Field > Sent: 23 May 2006 09:09 > To: MailScanner Beta-testers > Subject: 4.54.4 > > I have just released 4.54.4 for you. I thought of that a while ago -- it has a few major drawbacks though: 1) Speed: time MailScanner --lint = real 0m10.789s 2) Because of the speed issue, it would require some form or persistent storage (shared memory) between the Apache children with the result cached until Apache is restarted. This would cause a problem if the virus scanners are changed and the person that initialises this gets to wait 10+ seconds before the page is displayed. 3) If virus scanners are changed in the future to a different set, then the old historical data is lost (as the regexps no longer match). 4) This original method was really really ugly... > > What happens when the regexp needs to use a ( ) before the one > containing the virus name? > That would be okay -- you would have do two ( ) captures, one for the filename and the other for the virus name, then have a munge rule to say which is with for each scanner e.g. $1 = virusname, $2 = filename or vice versa. > > Eek. This is actually going to involve some work isn't it :( > It is -- but I really think it will be worth the pain. Thinking about this further - I could move all of this functionality into a CustomFunction and work it out in there as I can get the list of scanners from MailScanner::SweepViruses::InstalledScanners(); and that would save you from having to put this into SweepViruses... I carried over the new sophos wrapper that you released this morning, and had to zap the two IMAP files in lib/MailScanner to get 4.54.4 to work right. So I'm running version 4.54.5 already! Looks ok for the nanosecond. I thought I was running a stable release until I went to download 4.54.4. You might want to embrace the perl method of release numbering -- even is stable and odd is development (or vice versa). Or bump the major number to 5 and start a clean numbering scheme for stable/test. Regarding the ChangeLog, us beta-testers should start paying more attention to it, and you might want to refine how you update it. We were obviously snoozing if we missed a week's worth of Sophos updates because of the Sophos 5 changes you made in 4.54.x. I'm glad Martin caught this one! From jaearick at colby.edu Tue May 23 20:39:30 2006 From: jaearick at colby.edu (Jeff A. Earickson) Date: Tue, 23 May 2006 16:39:30 -0400 (EDT) Subject: Solaris 10 startup bug (still) Message-ID: Gang (especially fellow Solaris 10 users), This is a bug that has been vexing me for a month or so, and I would like to figure out how to trap it. My /etc/init.d startup script just causes MailScanner to loop without doing anything. Syslog says: MailScanner E-Mail Virus Scanner version 4.54.4 starting... MailScanner[28182]: Read 719 hostnames from the phishing whitelist MailScanner[28182]: Config: calling custom init function IPBlock MailScanner[28182]: Initialising IP blocking MailScanner[28182]: Read 128 IP blocking entries from /etc/MailScanner/IPBlock.conf MailScanner[28182]: Using SpamAssassin results cache MailScanner[28182]: Connected to SpamAssassin cache database MailScanner[28182]: Expired 28 records from the SpamAssassin cache (pause, repeat) I see a bunch of MS processes out there spinning their tires, no email gets processed. If I launch MailScanner by hand from the terminal like so: /opt/MailScanner/bin/MailScanner --debug /opt/MailScanner/etc/MailScanner.conf it works fine. Lint mode also works. If I launch it like so: /opt/MailScanner/bin/MailScanner /opt/MailScanner/etc/MailScanner.conf it loops-up. This is all that check_mailscanner basically does. If I let cron launch MailScanner, eg: 0,5,10,15,20,25,30,35,40,45,50,55 * * * * [ -x /opt/MailScanner/bin/check_mailscanner ] && /opt/MailScanner/bin/check_mailscanner >/dev/null 2>&1 This also works fine. This is currently how I restart MS, but I would like to figure out this bug so I can use my /etc/init.d script again. Ideas? Mailman supports it and on all the lists I run I use that feature. In my situation, I have a dedicated email account which receives mailing lists, most mailing lists prefix the subject while others don't. The ones that don't are annoying (but the list maangers won't change it aka Red Hat), but prefixing the subject line is done by others and it makes it easier for users to filter them out into folders etc. Michael. > Jeff Earickson > Colby College From mic at npgx.com.au Tue May 23 23:10:59 2006 From: mic at npgx.com.au (Michael Mansour) Date: Wed, 24 May 2006 09:10:59 +1000 Subject: sa-update daily error In-Reply-To: <447395FB.7050500@pacific.net> References: <20060523225404.M91778@npgx.com.au> <447395FB.7050500@pacific.net> Message-ID: <20060523230942.M32006@npgx.com.au> Hi Ken, > hmmm > well, you could just change it to > > exit; > > ... and then comment that out if you choose to enable it later. > Ken Yes that worked fine. It's disabled by default for one thing, so you really don't need to worry about it. It updates the rules that come with SA, not the rdj rules, which are separate. The rules that come with SA probably don't need updating all that often anyhow, but you can try running it from the command line and see how it goes "sa-update -D" puts it in debug mode, so it'll tell you what it's doing, if it succeeded or not, etc.. I am subscribed to over 50 mailing lists (that's my contrib to the Opensource community), and many forums. I know Axel Thimm (atrpms.net) is subscribed and monitors over 250 mailing lists (that's his contrib), all done through filtering keywords and the magic of procmail. I'd hate to imagine having so many email accounts :) In my case, filtering by subject is the best way. Michael. It manages 100+ folders, and a few hundred thousand messages, 20 lists or so, sorted into various archive folders by year, about 100 message filter rules, plus a few dozen rss feeds and a couple newsgroups. I still use Pine too, for remote access when I'm on a slow link, since the server here is pop3, it saves me having to download tons of mail from a remote location or use some webmail client. I've never spent much time trying to get Pine to really handle my mail though. I use a Cyrus IMAP server, and use some very long Sieve scripts to do all the filtering, so I don't have to bother with email client filters and their restrictions. I have a lot of filters so using client-side filters before Cyrus meant that switching email client was quite a job as I had to re-create all the filters :-( Cyrus rocks! I have had it installed for 1,000 very heavy users (all our staff and postgrads in our dept) since last summer. I have had to do 1 restart on it, and that was actually caused by amd (automounter) and not Cyrus anyway. Other than that, absolutely no maintenance needed whatsoever. Oh, and did I say how fast it is. Upgraded from UW-IMAP and the difference is enormous! Shame I can't say the same for our SexChange server which only handles 100 users yet needs far more maintenance time and effort. There are currently 3 software packages that impress me: 1) Cyrus IMAPd (Unices) 2) Roboform Pro (PC) 3) ChronoSync (Mac) Check them out, they are all very good at their jobs and have a lot of thought and time invested in them. -- Julian Field www.MailScanner.info Buy the MailScanner book at www.MailScanner.info/store Professional Support Services at www.MailScanner.biz MailScanner thanks transtec Computers for their support PGP footprint: EE81 D763 3DB0 0BFD E1DC 7222 11F6 5947 1415 B654 -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean. Julian, Having looked at the changelog, i think it would be beneficial to release a new stable version if you plan on a less frequent release cycle. The fixes look important, and the changes don't seem like they would cause any problems. Thanks. There have been a few problems with 4.53 and this is to remedy the problem. I will move it to stable in a few days. Compared to 4.54.4 the only important change is the auto-update of Sophos. The only new things over the previous beta 4.54.4 are these: 5 Added Net::IP Perl module as it is needed for SpamAssassin and Net::DNS. 5 Improved handling of Unicode encoded subject lines with a few trailing spaces. 5 Fresh translation of German languges.conf file. 5 Fixed bug in sophos-wrapper caused by confusion between Sophos V4 and V5. 5 Fixed bug stopping regexp rule /^$/ from working properly in rulesets. Yep, well that was sorta the whole point in starting the beta list, wasn't it? The idea that this sort of upside-down-ness of beta vs. stable shouldn't be repeated if possible, but with frequent releases, it's likely to happen occationally. The increase of beta testing and reporting should help. It does happen sometimes though, despite our best efforts.. as I (version 1) came before my son (version 2); but at 2 yrs old, he's still very much a beta human. ;-) That said, I think 4.54.5 is out of diapers. Likewise the label "beta" signals caution, 'own risk', and possible known-and-unfixed problems. We, the users, need to be able to trust those labels ("stable", "beta") and, crucially, their implied signals about production-quality reliability. (What follows is intended as constructive!) My understanding is that 4.53.y, which bears the label "stable", in fact has some serious problems and so is actually unstable in use. Whereas 4.54.x, which bears the cautionary label "beta" is, in practice, more reliable (production quality). (Is that understanding correct?) If so, then the labelling ("stable", "beta") becomes open to question (untrustworthy, even?) and casts a shadow of doubt over the trust we can place in the MS product that we download. Knowing that the label "stable" means reliable is, to my mind, much more important than release schedules. Aiming at a regular schedule is nice. But having the label "stable" mean reliable is absolutely essential. So... 4.53.x or 4.54.x ? My vote is that the "stable" link should point to the most reliable. And I understand that to be 4.54.x .
